This may sound crazy, but I think this would be a challenge for Michael Jordon. The top two challenges of any new coach will be recruiting and experience. MJ would be the best recruiter UNC and the NCAA has ever seen. MJ would have to rely on the current AD (which is one of great coaches of our time)as a mentor and receive "on the job" training. MJ is always looking for a new challenge and I believe the wizard organization and players have worn him out. I would love to hear this debated on PTI. Any comments..... Just curious, Mike M.

How can I get Phil Michaelson's University Womans Golf Team to send him an athletic bra?  I'm tired watching the guy run down hills on the course bouncing his flabby teats.  American golf fans seem to have a hunger for phony white bread. When waiting for the completion of this last tournament, did Phil drop his kid when the red light went off?  Is his wife's smile pasted on?  The self-deceived animal is still alive and well in America.  Go number "two!"

I don't know. Between Tony begging people to buy his book, him choosing Secretariat among the top 50 greatest North American athletes of the 20th century, and his love for celebrity boxing, among other things, Mike sure has enough material to make fun of Tony. However, sometimes as reluctant as I am to agree with you and Tony, I have to believe both you and Tony are right. I'm not a big horse racing fan, and I know that horse racing is massively on the decline over the past several decades, but at the time, horse racing was a big-time sport, and winning the Triple Crown was a major achievement for Secretariat. I always have the problem of voting for a non-human for best athletes, but I think you have to vote a horse among the top 50, and why not vote Secretariat for that honor. In terms of the other things -- Tony's book and celebrity boxing -- I love celebrity boxing, and although I haven't bought his book yet, I'm sure it's worth reading, and besides, spending money on his book goes to a good cause -- if enough people buy his book, maybe he'll quit advertising it every day at the end of PTI. I wonder how bad Mike will be when he finishes writing his book with Charles Barkley -- see if he advertises his book like Tony to get even with him. Sometimes Tony has funny things to say when advertising his book, but here I have to take a line again from Mike Wilbon: SHUT UP!

RE: Sharpe Returns Home

I couldn't believe PTI even mentioned the Broncos were considering getting Drew Bledsoe during the offseason -- what a joke! Griese is our leader, and a damn good one at that. With McCaffrey back (my favorite player, in case nobody noticed), with Sharpe back (a guy all Broncos fans have to be excited to see back in orange), and with Terrell Davis looking like he's back, I am counting the days until the NFL gets back to action. Until then, I'm staying tuned to PTI and this Iverson-Brown controversy going on. Although I don't have enough Iverson stuff on my web site yet, he is by far my favorite NBA player (besides Bronco jerseys, he is the only other player in any sport I own a jersey of), and I hate seeing him surrounded in this meaningless controversy. I love Wilbon's quote from Barkley: "Winning is the deodorant that removes all stink". Last year is no different than this year, except this year the 6ers went out in the first round instead of the NBA Finals. I just hope Iverson, Brown, and co. work things out in a hurry, I hope the N.Y. Rangers can finally pull things together and make the playoffs next year, I hope the Dodgers continue their progress this year and make the playoffs after a long stint away, and I hope the Broncos return to their normal form next year. Whew, what a foursome of teams to stay loyal to! It really tests my patience, but in the long run, it's worth it, because behind all the garbage, these are all teams that deserve all the success in the world.

Sharpe Returns Home

I consider myself one of, if not the biggest Denver Broncos fan in the history of the franchise. Although I agree with TK when he said that Sharpe coming back wasn't as good a move as it would have been if Elway was a quarterback, I have a problem with both he and Wilbon bashing Brian Griese. While I admit that Brian is not John, he's a solid field general to run the offense. Just two seasons ago, Griese ran the tables on the Oakland Raiders, in a year that many felt they were the best squad in the NFL. Because of a lack of defensive intensity, the Orange and Blue fell to the Ravens in a game that was disappointing to say the least...but Griese had already been injured at that point. This past season, Griese lost Ed McCaffrey within the first official thirty minutes of their season during the Monday night game with the Giants. Without McCaffrey, the D-Backs focused on Rod Smith...and he still managed to make some plays. 2001 was a tough year for the Broncos and their fans. But when I heard Shannon was on his way back, my smile widened again. I see us going 11-5 this season, pulling the Griese bandwagon back out of the station, and making it at least to the Conference Championship game. Once again it will be an Oakland vs. Denver matchup, and I'll love cheering against Romo...although I loved him for such a long time. TK and Mike will both be eating their words, and it will be fun to watch them debate the "GRIESE" topic, which will pop up at least twice during the regular season, mark my words. I hope that if Denver does have an off-year, at least the Titans...my second team if I had to choose, will pick it up. I'd love to see those two go head to head for a chance at the Super Bowl. Remember Tony, the Sporting News picked the Broncos to win the whole shebang last year...so obviously someone sees Griese's potential.

Just because I haven't responded to an issue in quite some time (over a month in fact) doesn't mean I've been ignoring PTI. In fact, I've been watching PTI religiously since I've started this PTI section of JoshShainin.com, not missing a single episode in that month and a half+. I've been swamped with school stuff, and there haven't been any vital issues I've felt like responding to, but I will always continue to list the PTI daily summaries above, even when I'm swamped. Anyway, I just want to thank whoever (known here as Mike Kornheiser) entered their PTI opinion below. I read the entire thing, and although I didn't feel like responding to Mike Wilbon's problem with Seinfeld at the time, I agree entirely with "Mike Kornheiser" and am glad somebody responded to Wilbon about this. Although I enjoy Wilbon and sometimes agree with him, just like "Mike Kornheiser" refers to, Wilbon touches issues of race too much and uses race as an excuse too much and too extremely. I know Wilbon has a much different background than I do, growing up as a black child in Chicago, but I have to believe "Mike Kornheiser" when he says even in the deep Southeast, although racial issues still exist, the problems and racism is declining, and although some white people will always have strong racist thoughts, Wilbon needs to realize that the majority of white people have no or very minor racial problems. About Seinfeld, I've only watched a couple of full episodes of Seinfeld, mostly catching bits and pieces of episodes, but from what I watched, I thought the show was hilarious, ranking up there with Fresh Prince and Home Improvement as some of the best all-time comedy sitcoms ever. When I was watching PTI and Wilbon strongly and enthusiastically said he had never seen an episode of Seinfeld -- as if that was a good thing -- it didn't ring well with me at first. I'm glad Tony made fun of that for awhile, and the fact that Mike has never seen an episode of Seinfeld isn't the biggest problem in the world, but Wilbon has to leave these racial problems to Johnny Cochran, and instead focus on the sports issues at hand. Talking about George Karl and his racial problems dealing with NBA coaches -- I'm fine with that, and think that's a great PTI topic, especially since the Bucks were the biggest disappointment in the NBA this year -- but turning PTI into a racial debate, using Seinfeld as its topic, that's a little too far for me.

Wilbon, Back off of Apartment 5A!

02:31:45 AM

Mike, Mike, Mike, Mike, Mike. I'm now about a year away from a journalism degree and hopefully I'll get a chance to debate my peers in the future at some point. PTI is, at least to me, the smartest and most entertaining thirty minutes on the 2002 tube. TK has been sort of an inspiration to me lately, as I do find myself agreeing with him more often than not. Wilbon I agree with as well, until the subject of race pops up. When he attacked Seinfeld, I had to say something and I'm ecstatic that this site is around so I can vent my Five Good Minutes. Michael, "lily white," are you serious? Now I will admit that African Americans were rare on the broadcast, but they were not absent. And the fact is, hopefully not stereotyping or offending on this one, but most Jewish New Yorkers are not known for spending lengthy amounts of times with minorities. I am sure some do, but at least in what I know of, the majority do not. I just feel like it is a superbly false generalization to claim that Seinfeld as a program is a slap in the face of African Americans. I'll end my soap box rant for the day by saying something that hopefully will not get me killed. I have in the past loved shows featuring African American stars, I actually have enjoyed "My Wife and Kids" over the past six months or so once I saw it for the first time. However, at least in the past, and this is just pure fact, during the same time that Jerry Seinfeld was putting on the greatest sitcom ever produced, Martin Lawrence and many other African comedians were doing their thing. I was offended sometimes watching those programs, however, as white men were always portrayed as racists and more often than not, law enforcement officers. Is that the reality we need to portray for the good of all society? Just as I watched Martin and all of the older programs, give Costanza a chance! I am currently employed as a Professional Wrestling commentator and announcer across the southeast...and I'll tell you, racism does still exist in the hearts of some, but many...including Jerry in my opinion, would rather not think any of that is actually around anymore.

Whities
Wednesday, March 13, 2002
04:05:31 AM

Background: A high school in Colorado calls itself the Reds, using an Indian head as its logo. To protest this, some students, all minorities, formed an intramural basketball team called the Fighting Whities. OK, this is great. Yeah, I acknowledge that there is a deeper issue here, which PTI dealt with, which eventually wound up with Wilbon saying that the Washington Redskins need to get rid of their logo, even change their name, since it is racist against American Indians, applying this last second to teams like the Kansas City Chiefs and Atlanta Braves, too. I agree with all that. However, Tony said this is somewhat humorous, and I think it's hysterical. Just like the Hofstra Flying Dutchmen (now they're the Pride, but Flying Dutchmen was much better), this isn't harse racism and is a name which is humorous and unique. Tons of teams are bulldogs, aggies, and cardinals, but how many teams have a Fighting Whitie as their team mascot and logo. Again, this isn't racism like racism towards African Americans, American Indians, etc. -- at least, being white, I'd laugh if someone called me a Fighting Whitie -- and reminded me of a conversation with Randy, my best friend, not too long ago. I don't know how it got to this, but we were talking about team names if Albuquerque got a professional team. At first I thought I'd like a strong name like the Albuquerque Venom; then I thought something like the New Mexico Cacti would be unique. However, the best name that evening, which I think would be absolutely awesome if a New Mexico team went with this, is the Albuquerque DWI. Doesn't that put fear in your opponents?! New Mexico has the most DWI in the country (last I checked), and since New Mexico isn't known for much else, and DWI is dangerous and deadly, the Albuquerque DWI works perfectly. Imagine the possibilities -- a beer bottle as the logo, a whino as the mascot. Sure, some people would protest this, just like those protesting the Fighting Whities, but boy would I love to see that. Even if the team was awful, just seeing the mascot, logo, and saying the name "Albuquerque DWI" would at least get some chuckles. We don't need another Heat or Suns or Rattlesnakes -- those names are boring -- we need the Albuquerque DWI. All that's left now is a population explosion, a much-improved economy, and a Mark Cuban to pave the way.

Gonzaga

"It's Ludicrous, It's Absurd." Just like Dick Vitale said about some mid-major teams that deserved to be in the big dance (Butler, Bowling Green, Ball State), and just like he said about Gonzaga being ranked 6th IN THE WEST, it's crazy that Gonzaga, who is ranked 6th in the country, gets a 6th seed in the West bracket, and will probably have to play Arizona in the round of 32. Two top ten teams playing in the round of 32. Maybe the committee is full of rich guys who don't care about the little guys, and just look at RPIs and strength of schedules to seed teams, but when I was watching the CBS NCAA Selection Show on Sunday, and saw Gonzaga get a 6th seed, I was speechless and furious. Sure, I was pumped Gonzaga was coming to Albuquerque, and Arizona vs. Gonzaga in Albuquerque -- it couldn't get much better than that -- but when will the committee realize that Gonzaga can play, and deserves treatment like other teams in the power conferences?

Pat Riley

What a turnaround in Miami! After starting the season 2-14 and 5-23, a lot of people thought if anybody could recover from this kind of start, Pat Riley would be that guy and could turn his team around and make the playoffs, but still, the fact that he has his team in position to make the playoffs is amazing, and reaffirms the fact that Pat Riley is an elite coach in the NBA, and deserves to be Coach of the Year if he can send his team to the playoffs. Flip Saunders, Mo Cheeks, and Byron Scott are other candidates I'd put up for Coach of the Year, but right now, I like Pat Riley, the Miami Heat, and their amazing turnaround the best.

Blondes: Tiger vs. Serena
Wednesday, March 06, 2002
02:06:15 AM

I had to add another topic to the issues list for March 4th, 2002, so this is it. Tony said he liked Tiger Woods' blonde hair more than Serena Williams' blonde hair, because it is "more effective". Huh?! Tiger always wears a hat when he golfs, so I didn't even know he had it dyed blonde again. At least you see Serena's long, blonde hair, which is very noticeable and therefore more effective. However, I want to see them both dye their hair orange next (although Tiger is a Raiders fan, and so that probably won't happen anytime soon. Argh, get a real team, Tiger).

PLEASE...Come to Albuquerque and win twice to get to the Sweet Sixteen...again. When the Zags came to Albuquerque 2 years ago, they lost in the first game they played (which was against Purdue in the Sweet Sixteen, 75-66). I've liked the Zags since I first heard about them when they were a #16 seed playing #1 North Carolina (I think) a little less than a decade ago (I was young when this happened, but I liked the name "Gonzaga", and have remembered it ever since). Since then, the Zags have turned into real contenders in the NCAAs, and there is nothing I'd like to see more than them coming through Albuquerque on their way to an amazing Final Four journey, and maybe even miraculous NCAA Championship.

Vince Carter
Wednesday, March 06, 2002
01:54:24 AM

Oh, this is ridiculous. Vince Carter is a superstar, whose team is going through a major slump during an important part of the season. Yes, he still has to show that he can carry a team on his back into and through the playoffs, and he has to prove he can play injured, but he will rebound and take his team to the playoffs, hopefully gaining the respect of PTI in the process.

Come on, 25 wins, and people not even thinking of putting them in the tournament?! I watched Butler a little bit this year on ESPN, and what I saw, I was impressed by. Last year, I saw Butler manhandle Wake Forest, this year Butler looks like it can do damage in the NCAA Tournament again, if they are selected as an at-large team. Pick them, or suffer endless debate on PTI, which is what maybe Mike and Tony want -- something to argue about for weeks.

Like Mike said, "We're one more pullout away from getting Monica in the ring". Who wouldn't want to see that -- Paula Jones vs. Monica Lewinsky? While we're at it, throw Linda Tripp in there and make it a 3-way free-for-all. This is getting better by the minute. Stay tuned -- who knows who'll be next in the ring.

Dilfer
Friday, March 06, 2002
01:45:27 AM

It's about time someone gave Trent Dilfer a chance to lead an NFL team. In Tampa, he went to a Pro Bowl while leading an ineffective offense. In Baltimore, he controlled an offense even worse than Tampa Bay. In Seattle, Mike Holmgren never gave Dilfer a fair chance to be the #1 QB, which is something Dilfer deserved. Dilfer has made a great move, signing a "large" contract with Seattle, now given the chance to lead probably the best offense he's been a part of, which isn't saying much, because Seattle will never be confused with the Rams or 49ers, two teams they now share a division with. Like Mike said, "The Devil you know is better than the Devil you don't know", and now that Dilfer has won over Holmgren, it could be good-times in Seattle for awhile, putting Holmgren and Dilfer back on top.

OK, don't get me wrong, I'd be terrified going to prison, just like I'd be terrified going to Beirut. However, I think I'd have a better chance finding freedom after watching Mike Tyson fight Lennox Lewis in prison than watching them fight in Beirut. The bottom line -- never watch a fight in prison or Beirut, unless maybe it's Amy Fisher vs. Tanya Harding, baby.

07:10:09 PM

OK, I feel better now that Elvis Grbac has been cut from the Ravens along with future Hall-of-Fame TE Shannon Sharpe, who we all remember had most of his fame with the Denver Broncos. Of course, they might resign Elvis after coming up with a new contract, and as chaotic as it is right now in Baltimore, they just might do that. If they don't, it will be interesting to see who the Ravens place in as QB, and if they do resign Elvis Grbac, I will love seeing the Ravens go 0-16 this year.

Louisville
Thursday, February 28, 2002
08:31:32 PM

Wouldn't that be great -- Texas Tech (Bob Knight) and Louisville (Rick Pitino) taking their teams to the NCAA Tournament in their first year with their team, and time off in between jobs (Pitino took small break after Celtics; Knight took year off after Indiana). The General -- Robert Knight -- is my favorite NCAA coach, barely ahead of Coach K (I can't even pronounce his name, let along spell it, but you know who I mean), and I feel good for Pitino after that awful stint in Boston, even if his team doesn't make the NCAA, but just improving Louisville this year and getting ready for a bright future. The question here is whether or not Louisville is in the NCAA, in the NIT, or still a "bubble team", and I'm with Mike on this one -- forget the bubble, Louisville played themselves into the NCAA Tournament with last night's huge win over Cincy.

Tiger vs. Daly
Thursday, February 28, 2002
08:14:29 PM

I know I'd root for John Daly in a duel with Tiger Woods, as much as I'm a fan of both golfers. But like they were saying on PTI, Tiger will bring the fans, and those fans will cheer on Daly, just like the Yankees bring the fans, and everyone wants them to lose. Can I smell ABC bringing Tiger and Daly together for a primetime golf event?! I doubt it, but I'm entitled to smell unlikely things.

Nolan Richardson
Thursday, February 28, 2002
08:10:14 PM

What a strange story! I've always liked Nolan and the way he coaches his teams. His National Championship season and last year in coaching his huge underdog team to winning the SEC Tournament Championship come to my mind first when I think of Nolan Richardson. Like Mike saying, "This is like a two-man play where Nolan's playing both characters", and Tony saying, "He deserves three seasons like this", this is absurd, and unless Nolan is somehow doing this to motivate his team for the SEC Tournament, he needs to let it go.

I am really upset that MNF got rid of Dennis Miller (I could really care less about Dan Fouts), but Al Michaels and John Madden as Monday Night Football's powerful 1-2 combo will be tough to beat, and I expect MNF ratings to grow this year, instead of fall like they have recently. No bad blood, no incompatibilities between Michaels and Madden -- Madden had to leave FOX, and now will make a splash on ABC.

Romo

I'm still going to wear the Romanowski T-shirt I still have from last year when he was a Bronco, but as if I needed another reason to cheer on the Broncos to destroy those evil Raiders, this is it. Romo, who fits in well with that pleasant Raiders image, could have chosen any other team he wanted, but he had to go to the Raiders. Just for that, again, I will still remember the good days when he was a true Bronco, but now, lets kick his ass.

Shannon Sharpe
Wednesday, February 27, 2002

OK, keep Elvis Grbac, and get rid of Shannon Sharpe. That makes sense. Tony, you said it best -- Billick takes Stoney Case, Scott Mitchell, Tony Banks, and Elvis Grbac, and gets rid of Trent Dilfer. I think I've said enough all ready. I just want to see the Ravens go 0-16 this year. And with the way the Ravens have beaten the Broncos these last few years, there is nothing more I'd like to see than that...except maybe the Raiders joining them with that record.

New Golf Tour
Wednesday, February 27, 2002
06:23:59 PM

This one caught me off guard. In my wildest dreams I would have never thought of a "middle-aged" tour for golf. However, although at first I thought Freddy Couples was insane for coming up with this idea -- after all, I don't really watch the Senior tour, so at first I thought I would probably skip this tour, too, after thinking about it, that might be a pretty good idea. Although this tour would probably mean the end of the Senior tour as we know it, I think watching guys like Fred Couples, Greg Norman, Mark O'Meara, etc. would be exciting -- guys who I remember as good golfers, and guys who still know how to play, but just can't compete with guys like Tiger Woods and Sergio Garcia. This is an issue I'm going to be watching closely.

Theo, I'm a Rangers fan (check out my web site), and I really thought that you guys would have everything figured out this year and could restore glory to the Rangers franchise. Things haven't been going so great lately, and you aren't helping things out at all. If you are threatening the league to retire, I don't think anybody really cares. In that case, please retire so the rest of the team can focus on winning again. Otherwise, SHUT UP and play.
